Exploring Orlando International Airport’s Future Plans

Orlando International Airport (MCO) is gearing up for significant growth, with more than 60 million passengers expected to travel through its gates in 2024, marking a 10% increase from the previous year’s record-breaking numbers.

CEO Kevin Thibault of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority revealed this projection during a recent I-Drive Chamber of Commerce luncheon, highlighting the airport’s remarkable expansion trajectory. Thibault emphasized that MCO, ranked as the nation’s fourth largest airport by size, possesses ample space for development, allowing for ambitious expansions without disrupting current operations.

The airport's South Terminal Complex is a focal point of future developments, with plans for additional gates at Terminal C and the construction of Terminal D underway. Terminal C, upon completion, will accommodate 60 million passengers, while Terminal D will offer similar capacity. Meanwhile, Terminals A and B are designed to handle 25 million passengers, ensuring efficient traffic flow and enhanced passenger experiences.

Among the upgrades planned for Terminal C is the installation of a pedestrian bridge connecting Brightline passengers directly to the terminal, enhancing connectivity and convenience. Furthermore, the airport aims to streamline rental car services with the construction of a consolidated rental car facility, freeing up parking spaces and improving operational efficiency.

Looking ahead, Orlando International Airport is embracing advanced air mobility, with plans to establish a vertiport near Terminal C for electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles (eVTOL), commonly known as air taxis. These futuristic aircraft will offer swift transportation options, with speeds of up to 175 mph, revolutionizing travel between MCO and neighboring regions.

Matt Broffman, head of public affairs for Lilium, a leading eVTOL manufacturer, expressed optimism about the future of air mobility, foreseeing the deployment of eVTOL aircraft in Orlando by 2026. These cutting-edge technologies are set to redefine the aviation landscape, offering passengers unparalleled convenience and efficiency.
